Iraia Nuku is an 18-year-old from Kawerau. He was the Head Boy at Tarawera High School last year and is a member of the Kawerau Youth Council. He is passionate about seeing youth get involved in their communities in areas they are interested in and loves seeing them exceed in these areas. His community faces issues with drug and alcohol abuse, gangs, suicide and getting kids engaged in their education. He wants to be able to bring back what he learns from Future Leaders and Festival for the Future to his community and form a network that supports youth and encourages community engagement.

If he were Prime Minister for a day, his top three priorities would be employment opportunity, education and holding positive youth development events for communities. He hopes his generation will be known for not letting obstacles stand in our way, and for always seeking out our dreams despite any obstacles. He found out about Future Leaders when he attended Festival for the Future 2017 and was keen to apply so he could share his ideas and collaborate with other future leaders from around New Zealand. If someone were to describe him in 3 words – he thinks it would be happy, positive and easily reachable.
